Is the Tablet Really Killing the e-Reader?

Below is an interesting article. I want to know your opinion. I’m sure you have more than one device that you are toting around. I carry the iPad with me and use Kindle App for my reading pleasure. I leave my Kindle 3G and Kindle Fire at home.

So the question is, is the iPad, Samsung Tablet and all other variants killing the e-reader? After all, the new iPad is awesome at reading books with its retina display screen. It’s still not easy on the eyes, and the weight tires me faster than reading on the Kindle. But it beats carrying more than one device. I only carry the Kindle 3G when I’m out of the country.

News Subscription and International Roaming

Amazon charge you per weekly while you are roaming. If you are a U.S Customer, Amazon will charge you for your subscription. Best thing to do before you go on your Vacation is to buy the weekly subscription of roaming for $4.99 or turn off your 3G. If you travel and forgot to turn off the 3G or you wanted to surf the internet on your Kindle and decide to turn on the 3G, and don’t want to spend the $1.99 per delivery, then leave your 3G off on your Kindle.

My other suggestion is to stop the subscription momentarily, so you can use your Kindle 3G to surf the internet. Surfing the internet freely with your Kindle only applies to Kindle Keyboard, not Kindle Touch. Kindle Touch allows you to surf Amazon.com website and Wikipedia freely, nothing else.

Here are for your references:

International Fees for U.S Customers: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200505490&#intservice

Coverage for Kindle 3G users: http://client0.cellmaps.com/tabs.html#cellmaps_intl_tab

The coverage maps might not do justice and can be confusing as it only display the coverage of 3G or EDGE Data Network, not the actual coverage of non-roaming charges. I can tel you for sure, in Jakarta, I get charge for personal documents delivery. However, there are also books that I didn’t have to pay for delivery if the books comes with free international delivery through 3G.

News Subscription on the other hand is not free. When I got to Jakarta, I was billed numerous times until I went to check on my Amazon account, and thank goodness it was only for 3 days. I purposely left my 3G off knowing that I would be roaming. Since I wasn’t staying long, but for some reason, some people wanted to borrow my Kindle 3G and turned on the 3G. I got it back with a $5.97 bill. But my news subscription got sent to my Kindle on time.

Kindle Touch 3G Does not work to Browse

Amazon disabled the feature to browse the internet on 3G. Please confirm this if its true, I myself was about to get the Kindle Touch 3G

Read more below:

Source: http://www.the-digital-reader.com/2012/04/21/how-to-browse-over-3g-on-the-kindle-touch/

One of the biggest shortcomings of the Kindle Touch is that you cannot browse over 3G. While it does have a web browser, Amazon has blocked you from using it to visit websites over the 3G connection; you have to use Wifi. This was a big change from past Kindles, all of whom could do it (even the original).

Earlier this week I came across instructions that claim to exploit a loophole.I found them via a deleted post on MobileRead. They reportedly come from the Duokan Forums, which are in Chinese and thus a little beyond my abilities to fact check.

I’m not sure yet if this loophole works or not, but I’m posting it so someone can test it and tell me. I don’t have a 3G equipped Kindle Touch, so I cannot.

Here’s how you can browse any web site over KT’s 3G connection.

  1. Go to Settings, Reading Options, Social Networks, make sure your don’t have your Twitter account linked. Unlink it if you do.
  2.  Select Link Account under Twitter.
  3. The Twitter login page will show up. Don’t login here, instead, click the Twitter icon at upper left corner, it will bring you to the Twitter homepage.
  4. Login with your Twitter account now. It won’t go back to Kindle’s Manage Your Social Networks page.
  5.  Send a tweet with the URL you wait to go. For instance, tweet “www.google.com”
  6.  Click on Home to force a refresh. You should see your last tweet now.
  7.  Click on the URL

You are free now… One catch, some web site gave me ‘Can not connect’ error, not sure why.
