  1. Hi Eberhard,
I’ve been researching about kindle for quite some time now before i dive in and order one myself. I just downloaded iphone version and been reading some samples (i made an Amazon account using my sister’s address in the US). today, i received an email from Amazon basically saying that they have tracked my IP address and i’m not in the US.

I was going to order an Amazon giftcard and used it with my sister’s US address but if they can still track my IP, do you think i can still buy kindle books? Have you been buying kindle books since you moved to Indonesia? Please kindly share your experience..

    Thank you!

    • Ron,

I have no problem so far. I’ve been buying books online through my Kindle and sometimes they charge me the $1.99 Wireless Delivery Service since I’m out of the country. I’ve been using Amazon.com service for the last 5 years. So they think I’m on vacation, a very long vacation. I’m also still subscribe to Times Automatic Delivery, which they Charge me $4.99 per week extra on top of the subscription. I have no problem, I hope never.

I have been buying books for my iPad with the Kindle App, and even with that, I don’t have any trouble. I suggest you download to your PC when you buy the books so it’s not wirelessly sync to your Kindle. That’s the best way to track you of your location. Good luck.

  2. i just got a kindle 3 days ago shipped from USA. i have registered my kindle’s serial number from the website. but i have no whispernet service from the kindle device itself. hence, i cant register it from my kindle. does anyone have any idea how to fix this? any help are kindly appreciated.

    • You might want to switch on your kindle for a couple of days with whisper net on so it can register itself. I had to do the same when I got to Jakarta. Otherwise you have to manually switch carrier. Go to settings and press 311 and select ok to manually switch data carrier. Just wait for a minute or two for kindle to refresh all wireless provider and it will give you a list to select. I usually use 3 (2G). Let me know how that goes. Good luck

  3. Hi,
is it possible to bu Kindle on one off basis?I live in Jakarta, and I can have it delivered to a friend’s address in the US, but I plan to use it for pdf files that I downloaded myself and not using Amazon.
    is it possible?

    thanks in advance

    • Kindle can read PDF with no problem. The latest software format the PDF correctly, but sometimes isn’t as good as e-book format. With PDF, you can’t bookmark or save your last reading location, or annotate notes to it. Theres lots of limitation to the PDF.

  4. Lately, Amazon have been implementing geographic IP check for purchasing ebooks off their Kindle Store. This is again, easily bypassed by using US-based proxies or VPN. You can use Anchorfree Hotspot Shield to spoof an American US IP while doing the purchase, and it went through.

  5. Amazon just released new Kindle. These are new features of the latest Kindle compares the previous one:
    • 21% smaller body, same 6″ reading area
    • 15% lighter
    • 50% improved screen contrast (new E ink screen technology called pearl)
    • crisper, darker fonts
    • Double the storage (4 GB)
    • Faster, quieter page turns
    • Built in Wi-Fi
    • Enhanced PDF reader
    • Soft-touch textured back
    • New WebKit-based browser
    • Voice Guide read-to-me menus
    • 2 color choices : White and Graphite
Has anyone pre-ordered the new Kindle?

  6. Hi Eberhard,

I’m now researching about how to maximising Kindle usage in Indonesia as I’m planning to purchase Kindle 3 with help of my friend in Hong Kong. Just wondering will I able to purchase kindle books from Indonesia through PC and make it into sort of the home-base for my e books? (like iTunes and iPod).

oh bearing in mind that I’ll be amazon’s new customer when I buy Kindle, I really hope that there wont be any problem to do the whole e book purchasing.

    • Novi,

Whenever I go to Amazon site to either buy music or ebooks, I use hotspot shield to spoof my if address. I have a US account tied to my home there. So everything checked out for me, but without hotspot shield, I won’t be able to download ebooks from Amazon site. So far I have been downloading ebook from my pc and do a USB transfer.

If you are new customer, you might not be able to download, because they ask for US Credit card and US Billing Address tied to your Credit Card so you can purchase ebooks. But please, do report back if it works, after all, I could be wrong.

  7. Thanks a lot for the quick reply. I don’t have US CC account, but I do have Hong Kong CC. Since Kindle 3 will be available in HK as well, do you think it will solve the purchasing problem?

I have no idea how Kindle works in their ‘outside US’ areas.

    • When it comes to the rights to purchase books outside of the agreement between Amazon and Publishers, it all depends on the publishers. You might or might not get all the books available as if you are in the US, just like you can’t buy European books if you are in the US and vice versa. Unless if Amazon and their Publishers have agreed to open up to all region, then our luck has changed for sure.

If you have a HK CC and you use Hotspot shield to spoof your IP to be in the US, I’m not sure how that will work. I haven’t tried that technique.

Again, any info you have regarding, please share since we are all in the same boat. Thanks

  8. These are information I got from Malaysia Kindle Community:

    3. The process of which to register and start using your Kindle 2, particularly for usage OUTSIDE the coverage of Sprint’s EVDO/3G Whispernet feature is pretty tricky. At first boot up of the device, while within coverage of Whispernet, you are offered to register your Kindle 2 wirelessly via Whispernet. This allows coupling of your Kindle 2 to a particular email address which holds an Amazon account. For American users, this account should hold no problems whatsoever since purchase of electronic books via Amazon requires a valid American-based credit card with validated US address to that particular credit card. There are several options to bypass this, one such option is to get a prepaid or virtual credit card with address based in the US, and topping up credit into that card using Malaysian credit card. This is tedious and heavily dependant on the third-party service provider doing the credit top-up to that account, which may incur additional charges.

    4. A simpler way to alleviate problem mentioned in #3 is registering your Kindle 2 as if it is outside wireless coverage. But first you need to prepare a couple of things.

    i) Register an email account that is devoid of any geographical markings/indications. This is usually marked by ***@yahoo.co.jp or similar, which marks geographical region. Tying your Kindle to an Amazon account linked to an email such as this will automatically disable your ability to purchase or download free books onto your Kindle 2. In my case, I used a freshly-made Gmail.com account, which is registered under US as the region when asked..

ii) You will also need two Amazon accounts. One is used to purchase Amazon gift cards, while the other is the receiving end of that gift card. For the Amazon account used to purchase the Gift cards, you can go ahead and register with Amazon, your Malaysian credit card. Let’s name this Amazon Account A. Go through the registering process, which will tie up an email address to this Amazon account, Account A. Once that is done, register a second account, let’s name this Amazon Account B. For Account B, use that freshly-made account from step i), and during registration, on ANY OCCASION when the registering process prompts for a geographical location, make sure you use a VALID US address. Google if you need to.

iii)Use Account A to purchase an Amazon Gift Card and when asked, emailed it either to yourself, or to the email attached to Amazon Account B. The only thing you need to make sure is that you need to make sure you can properly access the mailbox of that email address(es) so that you can retrieve the Gift Card code so that you can redeem them.

iv)Once you have retrieve the code, apply and redeem it on Account B, by logging into Account B, click “Your Account”, and under “Payment” section, click “Apple Gift Certificate/Card to Your Account”. Make sure the credit is redeem in by clicking “Your Account” and under the “Payment” section, click “View Gift Certificate/Card Balance”.

v)Register your Kindle ONLINE by going to the “Digital Content” section in the “Your Account”, and click “Manage your Kindle”. Check at the back of your Kindle, and enter your Kindle’s serial number to register.Make sure your Kindle is registered to Account B, not A. If you do make that mistake, you can click “Deregister” and rectify the situation. Under this section, will also appear the iPhone[s] and iPod Touch[es] registered to Account B. You can use your iPhone or iPod Touch to download and read your Kindle electronic material by downloading the “Kindle for iPhone” app from Apple’s Appstore and registering your iPhone/iPod Touch to Account B. Your iPhone/iPod Touch will then sync with Account B and all its purchased content, and you will be able to download your Kindle-purchased content to these devices as well! This is useful when you dont have your Kindle with you and want to continue on reading your favourite books on these secondary devices. Bear in mind though, reading on iPhones or iPod Touches will result on eye-strain after prolonged period of time. The Kindle is designed to mimic book pages with its electronic ink and eliminate this problem of eye-strain.

vi) Log into your Account B. Set up the 1-Click Payment Method, by entering your credit card details(credit card number, expiry date, CVV/CVV2 number), BUT use the same US address you have used to create Amazon Account B. What happens here is , because you have applied and credit the Gift card purchased from Account A into Account B, Amazon will not attempt to authorize the card until your Gift Card credit has depleted. So always keep your account credit above ZERO and you will be fine. The minimum amount of Gift card credit available for purchase from Amazon is USD5.

vii)Go ahead and purchase your first Kindle book. Since you are outside of the wireless Whispernet coverage, once you click the “Buy Now with 1-Click” button, your purchase will go into your digital locker. Under “Your Account”/ “Manage Your Kindle”, scroll down to the “Your Order” list, and your Kindle Book will be listed there. Click on the “+” sign next to the title to expand it, and under the “No Wireless Coverage?” will the “Download to Computer” button. Click that, and once the download is complete, plug in your Kindle using the USB cable that comes with it, to the computer and drag-and-drop the downloaded file (in .azw format) into the “Document” folder on your Kindle. You can also download Mobipocket and/or .prc ebooks wherever you can find them (I got mine from http://www.feedbooks.com/mobile) and drag-and-drop them into the same “Document” folder as well. Once you have unplugged your Kindle from your computer, your Kindle will auto-refresh and your books will come listed as “New!” in the “Home” screen.

Voila! The key here is to make sure that Account B is devoid of any indication or address that points towards location outside of the USA, be it the email address registered to it (hence step i)), or the address used for the payment of the Kindle books (hence step ii)).

  9. I just got a Kindle which was bought by a friend in Singapore. I am trying to buy books through “Shop in Kindle Store” menu, but it does not seem I can do it… Whenever I tried to click on “Books” or “Kindle Top Sellers”, it only gave me black screen. Why is that? Can I buy book through Kindle from Indonesia?

    • Hi, currently, Kindle Store isn’t available in South East Asia. In order for you to buy books, you have to have a credit card in the countries in which the Kindle is sold.

      Hopefully this will change soon.

  10. Hi all. I recently placed an order for kindle and it is delivered yesterday. the problem is its kindle2 3g international version without ads instead of kindle3. i thought i placed an order for kindle3 but by mistake i placed for kindle 2. i spent USD200 for it including shipping. if anybody is interested pls contact me.

  11. Hi there, im planning to buy kindle fire next November and i really need your help before i confirm to buy.
I need to know the connectivity options that kindle has-can i use sim card as modem to connect w/ internet or it just can works w/ wifi?
so far i know, we need to have US credit card to buy books or movies from Amazon, but if i dont have?how to buy?

    thanks :)

    • The Kindle Fire is regrettably comes in Wi-Fi only. At least for the moment. Even if it’s 3G, it would have the same setup as Kindle Touch 3G where Globally you can only surf the Amazon.com website only, unless if you are on Wi-Fi. Don’t expect the Kindle Fire to be able to do what the Kindle Keyboard 3G or the Kindle 3 can do. Just like you, I was expecting the same until Amazon made it clear on their 3G Global Connection changes to their new Kindle Family line-up.

  12. hey, i just got my kindle, i sent it to my mum’s address in the US and she brought it home to jakarta for me, i have already registered it to my amazon account as well as that i have already connected it with my wifi connection at home, but every time i go to the kindlestore and press books, it says “no items found” this happens when i press any of the options in the kindle store page (newspapers, magazines, audiobooks etc). ANd even when i search a book in the search box it always says no item found, what can i do? thanks

    • Hi,

I’m not familiar with the problem you are having. I would suggest resetting by turning off your Kindle Fire and then turning it back on. Sometimes it takes a while for Amazon to register the Kindle, and I had to restart mine after changing my email address for my personal documents.

  13. I just got my kindle fire yesterday. The kindle works fine but unfortunately I am unable to download any kind of kindle ebooks. I do have U.S adress but since I curently live in Indonesia, I register with my current Indonesian adress. What should I do to purchase kindle ebooks? Do I need to change my adress? Any comment or suggestion will be very appreciate. Thankyou.

  14. I am interested to buy Kindle but since I currently live in Indonesia it would be hard. How much does Amazaon charge for shipping to Indonesia (Jakarta) and how much do we need to pay for custom? Is that better to buy Kindle 3 or Touch? Any input is welcome. Thanks.

  15. I am interested to buy Kindle but since I currently live in Indonesia it would be hard. How much does Amazaon charge for shipping to Indonesia (Jakarta) and how much do we need to pay for custom? Is that better to buy Kindle 3 or Touch?

I have an Australian credit card. Will that help me in buying?

I read in http://www.eumorastore.net/Buying_Kindle_In_Indonesia.html about creating a ComGateway account but I am still wondering how much will the shipping charge from Amazon plus ComGateway shipping charge and custom. Is that worth the trouble or is it best to buy it from some sort of distributor here? There is a thread in kaskus.com about Kindle Touch for 1,550,000 Rupiah which is the$99 version.
Is it better to buy it from that distributor?

    Any input is welcome. Thanks.

    • If your Credit Card is based in Australia, you may still be able to buy books that are published only in that region. So you may be limited. Sorry, I’m not familiar with the setup of Australian Credit Card.

  16. Hi,

I’m staying in Jakarta but I have Singapore Credit Card (CC). I often shop on Amazon.com and has amazon account link to that CC.

However, I can’t buy any books using my Kindle in Jakarta. Any suggestion how to do it?

    Thanks.

  17. I’m thinking of buy a new kindle touch from the U.S. ,then having a friend bring it to Jakarta for me. I currently use the kindle app on my ipod touch and macair, I am able to buy books because I have a u.s. credit card and address listed. but I’m concerned that the kindel touch, since its wifi only will be shown as being in indonesia and thus wouldnt be able to buy books. anyone try it out here? thanks

    • There is no difference in 3G or Wifi Only. I use 3G anywhere in the world, and I can download books from Amazon. As long as you have a valid U.S CC and an address tied up to the CC, you should be good. Kindle Touch is a nice piece of hardware.

  18. Adding my experience with Kindle Touch to Rory (and everyone else who still has problems):

As long as you have an Amazon account with valid credit card, you can buy it anywhere. Just set your location to US one, cause there’s only limited number of books if you have it set to Asia.

Also, if you haven’t bought one, you don’t have to ask your friend to buy for you. I know some trusted local sellers who will give you a good price.

Thanks Eberhard for building this forum.

  19. I just bought a Kindle Touch for my daughter who is living in Jakarta. I have been reading your comments and wonder – she is from Canada but has been living in Jakarta for 2 years. not sure if she has an american credit card? Is this going to be difficult for her living in jakarta and trying to download books there? Thanks Ena

    • Canada has their own store. If your daughter has Canada CC, she may purchase books from Canada store, though the library is not as extensive as U.S Store. She can still use her Kindle Touch in Jakarta, shouldn’t be a problem. You can also send books as a gift to your daughters Kindle if you have a U.S CC and U.S Address.

  20. Hey, I just recently bought a kindle fire from Singapore, I tried to root it to get full access, and then i booted it once and it worked fine, bu then later, i tried to restore to factory settings and then, when the kindle fire rebooted it was stuck on a yellow triangle error and cannot open open my kindle fire anymore, any help?

    • Sorry, can’t help you there since I did not root my Kindle Fire. What’s wrong with leaving it rooted? You did all that work and you wanted to revert back? I would stay rooted, but I didn’t do it on my Kindle Fire since I have another Android to play with to root and all that good stuff. I thought the Kindle Fire might be a little sensitive to rooting, so I stayed away, for now. Good luck.

  21. For whatever reason the actual imagery arent loading in your content for me, all the other graphics on the webpage operates flawlessly but imagery in a entry just comes up with a little red-colored cross

  22. I plan to buy a Kindle Touch for my niece that lives in Indonesia. I live in the US and will be purchasing it as well as linking the account under my name and credit card. So all the bills should be under my name.
My questions is, will she be able to download books over there?

I read about all these IP tracking and possible blocks in South East Asia. Just wondering if its a good idea or not.

    Thanks

    Any information would help.

    • So far I have no problem purchasing books in Indonesia, or even when I travel in Singapore. Just get ready for weekly roaming charges for Kindle Touch 3G. I have the Kindle Fire and is able to purchase videos, music, books and magazines without a hitch. I use my Credit Card and Home Address in the U.S. As long as your niece don’t download with the 3G, there shouldn’t be any additional charges to your credit card. Even if you got her the 3G, you can educate her to use the Wi-Fi instead of the 3G.

You can also send her Kindle Book as a gift to her Kindle Touch, but since she’s using your account and credit card, the gift is pretty much bottomless. :)

Hope she enjoys her Kindle Touch.
